MATE (Laila Dybkjaer)
The multi-partner EC-funded MATE project (Telematics Project LE4-8370) aimed to develop an SGML-based standard for annotating spoken dialogue corpora, and tools to "make the processes of knowledge acquisition and extraction more efficient." Deliverable D1.1 surveys a wide variety of annotation schemes, and includes a useful page of links. MATE implements Thompson and McKelvie's notion of standoff markup, which is related to the CES and TEI proposals. The MATE project was the predecessor of the NITE project.
