SAMPA (John Wells)
SAMPA (Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet) is a machine-readable ASCII transliteration of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Originally developed by phoneticians to code six European languages, it is currently being extended to cover many more languages. SAMPROSA is an extension for transcribing prosodic information, and XSAMPA is an extension which covers every symbol on the IPA chart, in principle allowing transcription of all the world's languages.
