[http://www.sign-lang.uni-hamburg.de/software/syncWRITER/info.english.html syncWRITER] <br />This is commercial software for the Mac which allows you to synchronize different "tracks" -- e.g., multiple transcription tracks, a video track and a comment track. The authors call a collection of these tracks a "score" and the format resembles a musical score. Video is stored in a track as a series of time-stamped frames. A user interested in a specific part of the video can put the desired frames on the score and use the other tracks to describe them. Although playing a video is allowed, it is not synchronized with the other tracks while playing. The software is not distributed commercially any more by its original vendor, a copy is still available from the [http://exmaralda.org/syncwriter.html EXMARaLDA website]. An import filter for converting syncWriter data to a more sustainable XML format is integrated in [[EXMARaLDA]].

This wiki describes tools and formats for creating and managing ''linguistic annotations''. `Linguistic annotation<nowiki>‘</nowiki> covers any descriptive or analytic notations applied to raw language data. Ariadne is a web-based Corpus Management System with a strong focus on multi-user resource management and the processing of multimodal data. It is being developed within the [http://www.sfb673.org Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich) 673 "Alignment in Communication"] at Bielefeld University.

Ariadne's core functions include file storage and management as well as establishing a generic model of linguistic data formats to simplify tasks operating on these data sets. So far, conversion routines between [[Praat]] and [[ELAN]] documents and the internal data format have been developed, some more are in active development.

ANNIS

ANNIS is an open-source web application that provides access to multi-layer richly annotated corpora. It provides search and visualization functionality for complex constellations of token and token span-based annotations, hierarchical graph structures such as syntax trees or rhetorical annotations, arbitrary labeled pointing relations, used for example in coreference annotation, and also for metadata. Multimodal data can also be aligned with corpora, though this is limited at present by a lack of streaming functionality.

ANNIS2, The current iteration of the ANNIS software, is being used and developed within SFB 632 ("Information structure: the linguistic means for structuring utterances, sentences and texts"). In the SFB, a number of different projects collect and annotate data according to the common SFB Annotation Standard. This data, which is annotated using a small set of annotation tools ([[EXMARaLDA]], [[annotate]] (TigerXML), [[MMAX]], [[RSTTool]]), is mapped to the encoding standard of the SFB, [[PAULA]] (Potsdamer Austauschformat für Linguistische Annotation / Potsdam Interchange Format for Linguistic Annotation), which serves as the basis for further processing.

[http://www.exmaralda.org EXMARaLDA] is an acronym of "Extensible Markup Language for Discourse Annotation". It is a system of concepts, data formats and tools for the computer assisted transcription and annotation of spoken language. EXMARaLDA is being developed in a project at the [http://www.uni-hamburg.de/fachbereiche-einrichtungen/sfb538/index_e.html Collaborative Research Center "Multilingualism" (Sonderforschungsbereich "Mehrsprachigkeit" - SFB 538)] at the University of Hamburg. The system's software tools - an editor for transcriptions in musical score notation, a corpus manager for administrating corpus meta-data, and a concordancing tool - are freely available to users outside the SFB.

The main features of EXMARaLDA are:
* XML based data formats - All EXMARaLDA transcriptions are stored in XML files. The use of this W3C standard ensures flexible usability and long-term archivability of the data.
* Java based tools - All software tools for creating and working with EXMARaLDA data are JAVA applications. This makes them suitable for all currently used operating systems (Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Unix).
* Interoperability - The EXMARaLDA concept is loosely based on the annotation graph framework (Bird/Liberman 2001) and thus aims at a maximal exchangeability and reusability of transcription data. Hence, it is possible to create and edit EXMARaLDA data not only with the system's own tools, but also with other popular software (like [[Praat]], [[ELAN]], [[Transcriber]], [[CHILDES]], [[WinPitch]] or the [[TASX]] Annotator). An import and export facility for [[TEI]] data is also available, as well as import filters for [[SyncWriter]] and [[HIAT-DOS]] data.

Furthermore, EXMARaLDA data can be transformed into a number of widely used presentation formats (RTF, HTML, PDF,SVG) for web-based or printed publication. [http://aune.lpl.univ-aix.fr/~bigi/sppas/index.php SPPAS] is a tool to produce automatically phonetic annotations from a recorded speech sound and its transcription. The whole procedure is a succession of automatic steps. Result is a set of TextGrid files. SPPAS is open source software issued under the GNU Public License.
SPPAS is currently designed for French, English, Italian and Chinese and there is a way to add other languages.
Operating systems are: Linux, MacOS and Windows.

The [http://www.research.ibm.com/VideoAnnEx/ VideoAnnEx] annotation tool, developed by IBM, assists authors in the task of annotating video sequences with MPEG-7 metadata. Each shot in the video sequence can be annotated with static scene descriptions, key object descriptions, event descriptions, and other lexicon sets. The annotated descriptions are associated with each video shot and are stored as MPEG-7 descriptions in an output XML file. VideoAnnEx can also open MPEG-7 files in order to display the annotations for the corresponding video sequence. The annotation tool also allows customized lexicons to be created, saved, downloaded, and updated.
