[https://code.google.com/p/morphisto/ Morphisto] is a morphological analyzer and generator for German wordforms. The basis of Morphisto is the open-source SMOR morphology for the German language developed by the University of Stuttgart (GPL v2) for which a free lexicon is provided under the Creative Commons 3.0 BY-SA Non-Commercial license.

The Morphisto lexicon was originally developed at the Institute for the German Language, Mannheim (Germany) as part of the TextGrid project. This site hosts the new central place to go on the net for everything regarding Morphisto: Bugfixes and improvements, new feature, utilities, and getting in touch with the developers.

Morphisto requires as dependency the SFST toolkit available from the University of Stuttgart, as well as a computer running a contemporary Unix distribution (Ubuntu, Debian, OSX, you name it).

The DFG Viewer is a browser web service for displaying digital representations from decentralised library repositories. It has an XML interface for exchanging meta- and structural data in the METS/MODS format. Displaying of a digital representation is enriched and supplemented with additional functions, if applicable, with the help of these data.

As a result, users are provided with a uniform interface for viewing digitised media. They can browse documents, view and download the individual digital representations in various resolutions and switch to the respective web presentation of the library involved upon a request to that end in order to use further possibilities there.

The DFG Viewer is based on the free CMS TYPO3 and can be used free of charge by anyone interested. This can either be done centrally via the web service operated here or by means of a local implementation. In this context, connection is optionally provided via a native XML interface or via the standardised OAI protocol. You can find comprehensive documentations, examples and useful tips regarding both application scenarios there.

This wiki describes tools and formats for creating and managing ''linguistic annotations''. `Linguistic annotation<nowiki>‘</nowiki> covers any descriptive or analytic notations applied to raw language data. The basic data may be in the form of time functions -- audio, video and/or physiological recordings -- or it may be textual. The added notations may include transcriptions of all sorts (from phonetic features to discourse structures), part-of-speech and sense tagging, syntactic analysis, "named entity" identification, co-reference annotation, and so on. The focus is on tools which have been widely used for constructing annotated linguistic databases, and on the formats commonly adopted by such tools and databases.

[http://projects.ldc.upenn.edu/FORM/ FORM: A Kinematic Gesture-Annotation Scheme ] ([mailto:cmartell@unagi.cis.upenn.edu Craig Martell]) <br />FORM is a gesture annotation scheme designed to capture the kinematic information in gesture from videos of speakers. The FORM project is currently building a detailed database of gesture-annotated videos stored in [http://agtk.sourceforge.net/ Annotation Graph] format. This will allow the gestural information to be augmented with other linguistic information, like parse-tress of the sentences accompanying the gestures, discourse structure, intonation information, etc.

FORM encodes the "phonetics" of gesture by giving geometric descriptions of location and movement of the right and left arms and hands, the torso and the head. Other kinematic information like effort and shape are also recorded.

Currently, FORM uses [[Anvil]], but they are developing FORMTool, their own open-sourced gesture annotation tool. This tool will be of use to anyone wanting to encode linguistic information from videos in Annotaiton Graph format.

ATLAS is a joint initiative of [http://www.nist.gov/ NIST], [http://www.mitre.org/ MITRE] and the [http://www.ldc.upenn.edu/ LDC] to build a general purpose annotation architecture and a data interchange format. The starting point is the [http://www.ldc.upenn.edu/sb/home/publications.html#specom00 annotation graph] model, with some significant generalizations. An [http://www.ldc.upenn.edu/sb/home/publications.html#lrec00-atlas LREC paper] describes the model.

The ATLAS project is no longer actively supported - a Java-implementation of the ATLAS APIs exists under the name of jATLAS. A software implementations that support ATLAS annotation exist: [[Calisto]]
HIAT-DOS (Review)

Herrner:

This is a review of HIAT-DOS written by [http://www.uni-hamburg.de/fachbereiche-einrichtungen/sfb538/thomasschmidt.html Thomas Schmidt] for the working group "Transcription and annotation of primary data" at the [[E-MELD]] workshop 2006.
----
Clarification: [[HIAT]] (Halbinterpretative Arbeitstranskriptionen - „semi-interpretative working transcriptions“) is the name of a transcription convention. It is not the name of a software tool, but there are several tools that were designed with transcription according to HIAT in mind. [[HIAT-DOS]] is one of these tools, the others are [[syncWriter]] and the [[EXMARaLDA]] Partitur-Editor. The latter offers an import filter for transforming HIAT-DOS data to XML (this will still require manual post-editing, though).

HIAT-DOS is an MS-DOS application, i.e. it will run on Windows, but without making use of the operating system's graphical user interface. It will not run on any other operating system. The main idea of the tool is to support the user in creating transcriptions in musical score notation, i.e. transcriptions where the contributions of different speakers are arranged on separate tiers making possible an intuitive representation of simultaneous or overlapping speech events. Creating and editing such muscial score transcripts in standard text processing software can be tedious because changes, deletions and insertions often make necessary a complete re-arrangement of the whole system wrt line-wrapping etc. HIAT-DOS is meant to help in that task. A transcript that has been created in HIAT-DOS can be exported to RTF or HTML for further editing in a text processing software, printout, web display etc.

HIAT-DOS is, by all standards, an outdated tool. Its interface is completely text-based – it offers no GUI menus, no mouse support etc. Furthermore, it does not offer any support for linking transcripts with the underlying audio or video signal. This alone makes it inferior to virtually every other transcription software featured in this (i.e. the [[E-MELD]]) tool room. An even more serious drawback, however, is the fact that HIAT-DOS data fail to meet any of the current best practices for sustainable data handling. The data format of the tool itself is a text-based format which describes the display rather than the content of a transcription. As far as I can tell, the character encoding used in this format is not compatible with any current standard (it may be using an old IBM code page). It is certainly not possible to produce Unicode-compliant data with HIAT-DOS. And it should be very difficult to use the tool with any other alphabet than Standard Latin (with German extensions). The tool's export formats (RTF and HTML) are also 100% display-oriented and do little to make HIAT-DOS data more suitable for archiving. Development of the tool came to a standstill over ten years ago, the source code is not available, and there is hardly any documentation. For all of these reasons, I would strongly discourage any researcher interested in producing exchangeable and archivable data from using HIAT-DOS.
To quote Albert Bickford (on IT for MS-DOS): “A great tool when it was released, but now left to rest in peace.”

[http://www.wesay.org WeSay] helps non-linguists build a dictionary in their own language. It has various ways to help native speakers to think of words in their language and enter some basic data about them (no backslash codes, just forms to fill in). The program is customizable and task-oriented, giving the advisor the ability to turn on/off tasks as needed and as the user receives training for those tasks. WeSay uses a standard xml format, so data can be exchanged with linguist-oriented tools like FieldWorks. Users can collaborate via USB flash drive or email.
WeSay requires the .Net-Framework to run and is available for Windows and Linux (with mono).

WeSay is an open-source co-production of Payap Language Software, SIL PNG, and SIL International.

Alembic Workbench is an SGML-based annotation system. Apart from the usual kinds of textual annotations, the workbench enables various kinds of specialized annotations including co-reference annotations (cf. the Message Understanding Conference markup rules), various kinds of user-defined inter-tag pointers, and (shortly) general template annotation (aka relations, frames, or events). The Alembic multi-lingual NLP system provides access to taggers for a wide variety of extraction levels, and applications have now been built for several languages. The software has a sophisticated visualisation component. It runs on Sun workstations and was freely distributed. By now, it is not available any more.

[http://www.mitre.org/tech/alembic-workbench/ Alembic Workbench] is an SGML-based annotation system. It runs on Sun workstations and is freely distributed.

Software implementations that support ATLAS annotation exist: [[Alembic Workbench]] and [[Calisto]]

The [http://callisto.mitre.org/ Calisto] annotation tool was developed to support linguistic annotation of textual sources for any Unicode-supported language.

Callisto has been built with a modular design, and utilizes standoff-annotation, allowing for unique tag-set definitions and domain dependent interfaces. Standoff-annotation support, provided by jATLAS, allows for nearly any annotation task to be represented.

The modular design of Callisto allows it to be extended with user interface components specific to a domain. Default tag editing capabilities are provided through a highlighted text display, and tag attribute tables. As domain specific extension components are developed, they may be integrated into the core of Callisto, to become part of the standard suite of available components.

Callisto is written in Java, taking advantage of it's portability, and language support.

==Linguistic Annotation Wiki==
